North Korea nuclear bomb test accidentally destroys a City

According to a recent report by Diplomat, a Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missile, tested by North Korea in April 28, 2017, failed halfway through its test flight and ended up crashing into Tokchon, a city few miles away from Pyongyang. Tokchon has a population of around 200,000.

The launch - from Pukchang Airfield in South Pyongan Province - is said to have gone awry soon after takeoff, with a US source telling The Diplomat the missile's "first stage" engines failed after about 60 seconds.

The blast from missile had caused a significant damage to a complex of industrial or agricultural buildings, The Diplomat magazine reported, citing a USA intelligence source alongside satellite imagery.

The unpredictability and mobility of North Korea's launches mean the United States or its allies would have a hard time preempting such a launch or even knowing where to look for one.

Satellite images from Google Earth and PlanetLabs published in The Diplomat appear to corroborate the source, showing damage from debris in a building complex located near a large group of other buildings.

However The Diplomat said it was impossible to ascertain whether there was any loss of life.

Experts warn that North Korea's success with missile tests over the past two years is due largely to Kim Jong Un's uncharacteristically cool acceptance of failure. And there has been times they have done it from heavily populated regions.

Using mobile missile launchers, which sometimes even have treads like a tank, North Korea showed in 2017 it could launch from virtually anywhere within its borders. Strangely, similar tests had previously been undertaken at a sea side town in order to prevent any wide-scale destruction if the missile failed (a crash into the sea being preferable to a city), but in early April, new testing sites were chosen.

Kim announced his reclusive nation had become a "full nuclear state" in November following the successful launch of his most powerful rocket. Apart from Hwasong-12, North Korea also developed intercontinental ballistic missile Hwasong-14 and the Hwasong-15 previous year.

Kim Jong Un conducted 16 missile tests since February 2017, firing 23 various missiles.
