Time's up for Hollywood harassment, say leading actors

700000 Female Farmworkers Say They Stand With Hollywood Actors Against Sexual Assault Time's Up: Reese Witherspoon and Cate Blanchett back campaign to fight sexual harassment
Charlie Simmons | 02 January, 2018, 12:15

The campaign includes a legal fund to help women protect themselves from sexual misconduct.

"If this group of women can't fight for a model for other women who don't have as much power and privilege, then who can?"

Organisers also plan to ask women walking the red carpet at the Golden Globes this year to wear black.

Time's Up also calls for more women in positions of power and leadership, as well as equal benefits, opportunities, pay and representation for women, and urges the media to turn the spotlight on abuses in 'less glamorized and valorized trades'.

The open letter opens with "Dear sisters" and closes 'in solidarity'. Rhimes told the New York Times.

"As a first step towards helping women and men across the country seek justice, the signatories of this letter will be seeding a legal fund to help survivors of sexual assault and harassment across all industries challenge those responsible for the harm against them and give voice to their experiences".

A number of Hollywood big names, including Ava DuVernay, Kathleen Kennedy, Ashley Judd, Eva Longoria, America Ferrera, Constance Wu, Natalie Portman, Emma Stone, Kerry Washington, Shonda Rhimes, Rashida Jones, Reese Witherspoon and Jill Soloway, to name a few, also published an open letter to lay out their mission. For years, we've sold these awards shows as women, with our gowns and colours and our handsome faces and our glamour. "That's not what this moment is about".

The Time's Up website details and defines what sexual harassment is, and what to do if it happens to you.

Other elements include support for legislation that would target companies that fail to halt harassment and a push for gender equity in talent agencies and film studios.

Witherspoon said that in the past women have been "siloed off from each other".

While Time's Up plans to structure itself as a decentralised organisation with no formal hierarchy but established traditions, it plans to forge alliances with similarly focused organisations, among them 50/50 by 2020, a group that aims for equal gender representation in USA boardrooms by 2020.

So far the project has been able to raise $13 million of its targeted $15 million.
