'Multiple' Americans killed in Costa Rica plane crash

The Public Safety Ministry posted photographs of the crash site showing burning wreckage of the plane in Guanacaste, northwest Costa Rica.

A plane has crashed in Costa Rica, killing at least 12 people.

The private aircraft, a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan registered as TI-BEI, was part of Nature Air's fleet, officials said.

Information about the other US citizens wasn't immediately known.

"We can confirm the death of multiple U.S. citizens in an airplane crash in Costa Rica on December 31, 2017", a U.S. State Department spokesperson said.

"We express our condolences to all those affected by this tragedy", the spokesperson said. According to Costa Rican authorities, 10 of those passengers were U.S. citizens.

Enio Cubillo, director of Costa Rica Civil Aviation, said at a news conference that the Nature Air pilot, Juan Manuel Retana, was very experienced.

Early Monday "the investigations into the causes of the accident will begin", Solis said.The Costa Rican newspaper La Nacion gave the names of the 10 passengers as: Thibault Astruc, Amanda Geissler, Charles Palmer, Bruce Steinberg, Irene Steinberg, Matthew Steinberg, William Steinberg, Zachary Steinberg, Leslie Weiss and Sherry Wuu.

The plane went down in a heavily wooded area.

One of the pilots who died in the crash was the cousin of Costa Rican ex-President Laura Chinchilla, the former leader said on her Twitter account.
