Jack Del Rio Fired by Mark Davis After Raiders' Loss to Chargers

Philip Rivers Chargers Bills Jack Del Rio Fired by Mark Davis After Raiders' Loss to Chargers

The team gave Del Rio a four-year contract extension throughout 2020 in the offseason.

JDR announces that he will not be returning as head coach next year.

Meeting with reporters after the Oakland Raiders' season-ending loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, Jack Del Rio revealed that team owner Mark Davis had just informed him that he won't be back to coach the team in 2018. After going 7-9 in his first year, the team jumped to 12-4 last season and reached the playoffs.

The foundation, apparently, crumbled in a matter of months.

During a 6-10 finish in 2017 that resulted in a third-place finish in the AFC West, the Raiders struggled under offensive coordinator Todd Downing, fueled by a mediocre passing attack and a ground game that lingered near the bottom of the National Football League rankings all season despite the Raiders' big-money commitments to offensive linemen Kelechi Osemele, Gabe Jackson and Donald Penn. Over his three seasons as the Raiders coach he went 25-23 overall and 8-10 against AFC West rivals. Under first-year coordinator Todd Downing, the group appeared to take a step back, particularly Carr and receiver Amari Cooper.

The Raiders are believed to be on the verge of hiring Jon Gruden, their coach from 1998-2001, as Del Rio's replacement.

They were the upstarts previous year and were hot going into the playoffs until Derek Carr busted his ankle.
