Police in Los Angeles have arrested a man they suspect made a hoax emergency call that resulted in a police officer fatally shooting a man at the door of his own home, police said. The caller said the man was holding him, his mother and a sibling at gunpoint and that that man threatened to light the house on fire. The police and FBI were investigating whether the hoax call stemmed from an argument over an online game.
'This call was little peculiar for us, ' Livingston said.
The 28-year-old man died from his injuries at a local hospital, WPD Deputy Chief Troy Livingston says.
Officers arrived at the 1000 block of McCormick, where they were fully prepared for the hostage situation. Livingston said Finch was unarmed.
25-year-old Tyler Barriss has been arrested by the Los Angeles police, NBC News reports, and is believed to be the one responsible for calling Wichita and sending law enforcement to the home of the victim, 28-year-old Andrew Finch.
But Livingston said the man moved a hand toward the area of his waistband - a common place where guns are concealed. The officer that killed Finch is on paid leave as the department investigates further. Meanwhile, a member of the family identified Finch as the deceased. "That cop murdered my son over a false report".
The hoax call was made after a dispute over a wager in a game of Call of Duty, according to Dexerto, an online news service focused on gaming.
"We woke this morning to awful news about an innocent man losing his life", UMG spokeswoman Shannon Gerritzen said in an email to The Associated Press. She declined to disclose other details. It was hard to see clearly what happened. The prankster that calls in the false report will use caller ID spoofing, or some other high tech technique that disguises their phone number as being local.
