The governor of Mashhad, Mohammad Rahim Norouzian, said that "the demonstration was illegal but the police dealt with people with tolerance".

Images sent to CHRI and postings on social media show people in other cities in Khorasan Razavi Province, including Neishabour and Kashmar, shouting slogans including, "death to high prices", "death to the dictator", and "Death to Rouhani".

About 300 demonstrators gathered after what Fars called a "call by the anti-revolution" and shouted "political prisoners should be freed" and "freedom or death", while destroying some public property.

In the northeastern city of Mashhad, Iran's second largest city, security forces sprayed tear gas at the demonstrating crowds.

According to Article 27 of Iran's Constitution, "Public gatherings and marches may be freely held, provided arms are not carried and that they are not detrimental to the fundamental principles of Islam".

"Iran's leaders have turned a wealthy country with a rich history and culture into an economically depleted rogue state whose chief exports are violence, bloodshed, and chaos", the statement continued. Demonstrators reportedly gathered to protest rising prices in the country, alleged corruption in the government and Iran's involvement other in regional conflicts.

In Qom, a fearless young woman confronted the security forces and protested beating of youths.

"Video footage from Thursday's protest in Mashhad showed demonstrators chanting "Death to Rouhani", Leave Syria, think about us" and "Not Gaza, not Lebanon, my life for Iran".

President Rouhani promised that the deal he signed with world powers in 2015, which saw Iran limit its nuclear activities in return for the lifting of global sanctions, would boost economic growth.

Egg prices in Iran had doubled since last week, due to the government's culling of millions of chickens diagnosed with avian flu, a government spokesman said on Tuesday.

Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri, a close Rouhani ally, suggested that hardline opponents of the president may have started the protests.

Jahangiri called on the Iranian elites to reach consensus on the main problems that the country is facing today and added "to resolve the problems we need to allocate the required resources to bridge the current gap of social division and create consensus on the main issues".

Tehran-based analyst Saeed Leilaz told The Associated Press on Thursday that Rouhani's political rivals may have played a role in organizing the protests.
