Apple said the problem was that aging lithium batteries delivered power unevenly, which could cause iPhones to shutdown unexpectedly to protect the delicate circuits inside.

"We are hoping to get some answers on whether Apple intentionally restricted the performance of old iPhones and tried to hide this from customers", said the Korea Communications Commission. Some customers have complained that they replaced their entire phone, and not just the battery, in order to have a fast cellphone. With the update, iOS dynamically manages the maximum performance of some system components when needed to prevent a shutdown.

Apple also says it will cut the price of a battery replacement by $50 to $29. But Apple now says that there was a third factor that it should have taken into consideration, the continued deterioration of the battery in these units.

A conspiracy theory that has been around for quite awhile recently turned out to be true - sort of - as Apple officially confirmed that it does indeed slow down older iPhones as the batteries age and degrade. "There's been a lot of misunderstanding about this issue, so we would like to clarify and let you know about some changes we're making", the statement said.

Apple on Thursday denied that it has ever done anything to intentionally shorten the life of a product.

In Apple's confirmation of the "feature" it introduced a year ago, it didn't say that this was a common practice in the smartphone industry or anything of that sort.

The new message goes on to explain how rechargeable batteries age and how the battery's performance changes over its lifespan.

The electronics giant announced Thursday that it will lower the price of replacement batteries on the iPhone 6 or later as part of an apology for the performance issues with older phones.

Apple is already facing lawsuits in the United States over accusations of having defrauded iPhone users by slowing down devices without warning to compensate for poor battery performance. We're proud that Apple products are known for their durability, and for holding their value longer than our competitors' devices. Apple will also deploy an iOS software update in early 2018 to make battery health more visible to users, the company said.
