US Ambassador Denies Anti-Muslim Comments, Then Denies Denial On Dutch TV

Fake news’ quagmire US ambassador ties himself in knots over terrorism claim Peter Hoekstra being sworn in as US ambassador to the Netherlands
Charlie Simmons | 23 December, 2017, 02:08

It didn't go well.

Pete Hoekstra, who takes up his position in January, was being interviewed for Dutch current affairs show Niewsuur when he was asked to explain his past remarks about cars and politicians being set on fire in the Netherlands and the sprouting up of Muslim no-go zones.

A newly sworn-in USA ambassador has been called out on a 2015 statement, in which he claimed no-go areas were established by Muslim migrants in the Netherlands and that politicians had been burned.

"I didn't say that". That is actually an incorrect statement.

"I didn't say that", Hoekstra replies.

Pushed further on the matter just moments later, Hoekstra bizarrely then denied ever using the term fake news. Hoekstra, who was born in Holland but represented MI in the US House of Representatives, has now been caught up in a fake news wrangle.

"I didn't call that fake news", the Ambassador interjects.

Mr Hoekstra: No. I don't think I did.

Zwart was questioning the new ambassador about those comments, specifically his claim that there are "no-go zones" in the Netherlands. It's used to illustrate the notion that Western Europe - and, by extension, white Christian civilization - is being invaded and corrupted by radical Muslim immigrants. They are predominantly Muslim neighborhoods, located in European cities, allegedly ruled by Islamic law. In the clip, Hoekstra clearly argues Muslims have brought mayhem to the Netherlands, and that bureaucrats and vehicles are being set ablaze.

But the Dutch journalist showed him a clip of the comments from 2015. "Chaos in the Netherlands, there are cars being burnt, there are politicians that are being burnt ... and yes there are no-go zones in the Netherlands". "Chaos in the Netherlands, there are cars being burnt, there are politicians that are being burnt. and, yes, there are no-go zones in the Netherlands".

Hoekstra has frequently courted controversy in his time in politics.

A Dutch reporter caught the United States ambassador to the Netherlands in a baffling falsehood, ironically as the official complained about "fake news" on camera.
