Apple Inc.is developing an advanced heart-monitoring feature for future versions of its smartwatch, part of a broader push by the company to turn what was once a luxury fashion accessory into a serious medical device, according to people familiar with the plan.

Not only would it serve as an excellent tool for doctors to remotely remain apprised of the wellbeing of patient with cardiovascular conditions, but it could also provide an early diagnosis for unknown conditions without going to a doctor or doing a medical checkup.

With the advanced EKG heart monitor, the Apple Watch could do more than just checking and monitoring heart rate.

On the Apple Watch, the EKG monitor would be activated by squeezing the Watch's frame with two fingers.

EKGs are medical tests that typically use electrodes, which are placed on a person's skin, in order to monitor electrical patterns in between heartbeats. But they only monitor the heart's activity for short periods, limiting their ability to spot potential abnormalities.

On Thursday, Bloomberg reported that the Cupertino giant is now testing the use of Apple Watch as an EKG. As the second and third generations went on sale, the focus shifted to health and fitness, with Apple adding alerts for abnormal heart rate spikes.

While the inclusion of this feature will tempt many into buying future Apple Watch models, a cardiologist at University of California has stated such an Apple Watch, should it come to fruition, isn't intended for people who don't experience heart-related issues, such as arrhythmia. Just last month, it launched its Apple Heart Study app with the goal of determining whether the Apple Watch's existing heart rate system could be used to accurately detect irregular heart rhythms, according to MacRumors.
