Facebook is introducing new facial recognition features that will automatically notify users when their photo is posted on the social network.

"You're in control of your image on Facebook and can make choices such as whether to tag yourself, leave yourself untagged, or reach out to the person who posted the photo if you have concerns about it", Joaquin Quiñonero Candela, director of applied machine learning at Facebook, wrote in a post Tuesday .

"I can also confirm that we do not use this technology in People You May Know".

Anxious about someone using Facebook's facial recognition technology to replace their profile picture with your face? However, Facebook notes that if your tag suggestions setting is now set to "none", then your default face recognition setting will be set to "off" and will remain that way until you decide to change it. This approach was preferred by users over having settings for individual features that use facial recognition, Candela said.

A user must be part of the permitted audience for the page posting the photo in order to receive the notification.

The idea behind the feature is to "help you find photos that you're not tagged in and help you detect when others might be attempting to use your image as their profile picture", according to Facebook. We're all aware that Facebook knows more about us than we'd like, but this might be a step too far.

But if you think Facebook's facial recognition features are creepy, there will be a "simple on/off switch" in settings to turn it all off. When photos and videos are uploaded to Facebook, they are compared to images in the template to determine if there is a match.

The same technology is also being used for a new tool that supports people with visual impairments. If you're a little sensitive about how often you show up in pics on the internet, Facebook has a new privacy tool that may interest you. The site will now recognize new accounts made by people you have blocked and prevent the new account from sending you friend requests or messages.

Facebook's use of facial recognition will be governed by an on / off switch.

The goal of the feature, according to Facebook, is to help users better manage their online identity.
