Former President Barack Obama, who signed onto the Paris Agreement in 2015, lent his support to the mayors' actions in a speech to the North American Climate Summit on Tuesday afternoon. Obama and Democrats have spun the long-running sarcastic joke to upended criticism from conservatives who blamed the president for problems that had little to do with his policies.

It was billed as a first-of-its-kind worldwide pledge that supports the principles of the Paris Climate Accord that U.S. President Donald Trump rejected in June. He said the solution "was going to be up to all of us", according to the Chicago Tribune. "As it relates to climate change, we can't afford, as leaders of our respective cities, the absence of leadership and the wrongheadedness of policy by President Trump". As we took these actions, we saw the USA economy grow consistently.

"America's trade deficit with the world swung out to $48.7 billion in October from $44.9 billion in September which will take some steam out the recent trend of stronger economic growth", said Chris Rupkey, the Chief Financial Economist at the MUFG Union Bank, in a note to investors Tuesday. But the good news is that the Paris Agreement was never going to solve the climate crisis on its own.

"Sheltering future generations from the ravages of climate change should be something of an obsession for us", Obama said at the event in Chicago's Streeterville district.

The president also pivoted in addressing Trump's mandate for the United States to bow out of the Paris agreement announced in June, treading carefully and skillfully without giving importance to the president's name. What that means is investing in public transportation to reduce the carbon footprint, accelerating affordable renewable energy access and making city infrastructure more sustainable.

Mayors from cities in Mexico and Canada joined their USA counterparts in committing to reducing carbon emissions.

During the UN climate change conference in Germany last month, some 20 USA states, 110 cities and more than 1,400 businesses - which they said represented a bigger economy than any nation outside the U.S. and China - pledged to honor the commitment made in Paris. "Even as Washington fails to act, cities have the power and will to take decisive action to protect our planet and the health and safety of our residents".
