Smith started the Ravens' first 12 games this season and was tied for second on the team with three interceptions.

Then, the news broke that he reportedly tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance and will be suspended for four games as a result, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Smith also suffered a season-ending injury late a year ago, but the team feels more comfortable in their depth this time around.

It's a double black eye for Baltimore Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith.

The suspension does include the ramification of a loss of four games' pay, so the decision to drop the appeal is far from inconsequential, but Smith restructured his contract and only has a minimum base salary this year.

He has been dealing with an Achilles injury for most of the season and rested it by practicing only once or twice a week.

Smith's season ended in the second quarter Sunday, when he fell to the ground while trying to cover a deep route.

Smith, the Ravens' first-round pick in 2011, matched his career high with three interceptions this season.

The Baltimore Sun reported Smith and the team were made aware of the pending suspension last week. He's appeared in all 16 regular season games only twice; a year ago, he was placed on injured reserve after suffering a high-ankle sprain in Week 14.

On the season, the Ravens rank third in total passing yardage allowed and eighth in yards per attempt.

Rookie Marlon Humphrey replaced Smith on Sunday and is expected to take over the starting role.

The loss of Smith is a big hit to the Ravens (7-5), who control their playoff fate heading into the final four weeks of the regular season.
