Conyers last month stepped down from his position as the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee after acknowledging that in 2015 he settled a wrongful dismissal complaint, though the congressman denied the sexual misconduct accusations against him.

Conyers, the longest-serving current member of the House and the longest-serving African-American in history, called into a local radio show Tuesday to break the news. Conyers also said he backs his son, John Conyers III, as his replacement, though CNN reports his grandson might also be running for the seat.

Conyers" attorney Arnold Reed told the Detroit Free Press the new allegations from Grubbs are "another instance of tomfoolery from the mouth of Harvey Weinstein's attorney'. He said he plans to run for John Conyers' seat in Washington, D.C.

Democratic Representative John Conyers of MI, the longest-serving House member, announced on Tuesday that he's retiring from Congress immediately amid allegations that he sexually harassed members of his staff.

Conyers first was elected to the U.S. House in 1964. Such behaviour "was a regular part of life while working in the office of Rep. Conyers", she said. "It will be Congressman John Conyers who decides what it is he is going to do".

Grubbs also said she repeatedly saw Conyers touching and stroking the legs and buttocks of Brown and other female staffers.

'The allegations against congressman Conyers as we have learned more since Sunday are serious, disappointing and very credible, ' said Pelosi, a California representative who notably did not call for Conyers to go during a Sunday appearance on NBC's 'Meet the Press'.

The 88-year-old Conyers also submitted his decision to retire in a one-sentence letter Tuesday to House Speaker Paul Ryan and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. This, too, shall pass.

He added, "I want you to know that my legacy will continue through my children". He is the longest-serving member in the House.

Politicians and community leaders Monday demanded the end of the calls for Congressman John Conyers Jr.to resign amid accusations of sexual harassment by former staffers.

The Democratic lawmaker has been hospitalized for stress-related health reasons earlier this week after he felt dizzy and light-headed at his Detroit home.

The sexual harassment allegations against Conyers surfaced November 20 after BuzzFeed News reported he settled a wrongful dismissal complaint with an employee in 2015 for $27,000 in exchange for a confidentiality agreement and that he made advances toward female staffers, including requests for sexual favors, caressing their hands in a "sexually suggestive" way, and rubbing their legs and backs in an inappropriate manner while in the office or in public.

Melanie Sloan, a former Conyers aide and Washington lawyer, told The Washington Post last week that Conyers harassed and verbally abused her when she worked for his Washington office in the 1990s.

Another woman has come forward claiming with sexual misconduct allegations against Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, Blake Farenthold, R-Texas, and Sen. Another woman accused Conyers of sexual misconduct just days later.
