United States walks away from UN-led talks on migration

США отказались от присоединения к международному договору о миграции Trump Boycotts UN Migration Talks

The US mission to the United Nations said in a statement on Saturday that the declaration "contains numerous provisions that are inconsistent with US immigration and refugee policies and the Trump administration's immigration principles".

But late on Saturday, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said the declaration's "approach is simply not compatible with US sovereignty" and that the US will instead define its own migration plan.

But our decisions on immigrant policies should be done only by the Americans.

The declaration called for negotiations on a Global Compact for Migration, aimed at protecting the rights of refugees and migrants and helping them resettle.

"The US Mission to the United Nations informed the UN Secretary-General that the United States is ending its participation in the Global Compact on Migration", the US said in its statement on Saturday.

The United States has walked away from a United Nations effort to ease the global migration and refugee crisis, with the Trump administration saying it was no longer compatible with USA principles or priorities on the issue.

In 2016, after the Obama administration's decision to join the UN's New York Declaration on Refugees, America joined the process of agreement. No country has done more than the United States, and our generosity will continue. "As such, it has the experience and expertise to help ensure that this process leads to a successful outcome".

"I regret [the] USA decision to disengage from [the] process leading to a United Nations global compact on migration", Miroslav Lajcak tweeted after the decision was announced.

Following the September 2016 New York Declaration, the General Assembly started to develop this global compact in April 2017.

She explained the motives behind the move, saying that such domestic policy matters as migration decisions "must always be made by Americans and Americans alone".

The decision to pull out of the compact comes as a number of countries are preparing to meet in Mexico on Monday for a global conference on migration.

Kevin Appleby, the worldwide migration policy director at the Scalabrini worldwide Migration Network, a New York-based advocacy group, said the Trump administration was "more interested in appeasing a small minority of Americans than working with the world on a pressing global issue".

"As a result, President Donald Trump determined that the United States would end its participation in the compact process".

Under Trump, the US has also withdrawn from many global commitments, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal, the Paris climate agreement and UNESCO, the U.N.'s culture and education agency.
