One person was killed and seven others wounded early Sunday after a vehicle slammed onto a crowded sidewalk outside a New York City hookah bar following a knife fight, authorities and witnesses said.

Some of the injured, who were rushed to hospital, also reportedly had stab wounds. Police say they have a man in custody and are questioning him.

Police said two people got into a fight and stabbed each other before the deadly hit-and-run. "The bodies went flying". As several people were trying to stop the fight, a vehicle came rushing down the sidewalk, plowed into the group and kept going. The incident is not being investigated as a terror attack, police said.

"The auto was going really fast, at least 50 miles per hour on the sidewalk", a witness reported. They added that the suspected attacker fled the scene; the search for the driver is ongoing. The names and ages of the people struck were not immediately available. The pair were recovering and in stable condition. One of the wounded remained in critical condition, the police said. He pleaded not guilty last week to terrorism charges.
