Nebraska reportedly hiring UCF's Scott Frost as new head coach

After graduating from Nebraska in 1997 he played in the National Football League for seven seasons and held assistant coach positions at Nebraska, Kansas State, Northern Iowa and OR before taking over at Central Florida in 2016. The Golden Knights were 0-12 the year before Frost took over. University of Nebraska Athletic Director Bill Moos will introduce Frost at a Sunday news conference in Lincoln.

College football insider Brett McMurphy was first to report the news on Saturday afternoon.

"It is a great honor and privilege to have the opportunity to return to Nebraska and to lead the Husker football program", Frost said. UCF again improved by six victories with its flawless 12-0 record, marking the first undefeated regular season in UCF and AAC history.

In a press release, Moos said he hired Frost because "he is a rising star in the profession and a natural fit to lead the Nebraska program". Going from winless to unbeaten in a two year span is an FBS record. The Huskers have not won a conference championship in football since 1999 and have not contended for a national title since the early 2000s.

Frost was equally successful as a player.

After sitting out a season because of NCAA transfer rules, Frost succeeded Tommy Frazier at quarterback in 1996, leading the Huskers to an 11-2 record. Frost finished his Nebraska career with 2,677 pass yards, 1,534 rush yards and 46 total touchdowns.

He then went to OR to work as receivers coach under Kelly, and when Helfrich took over as head coach in 2013, he appointed Frost as his offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Frost, a 42-year-old Wood River native, also faces the pressure of being the popular prodigal-son choice of fans who bought "Frost Warning" t-shirts and started "Bring Scott Frost Back to Nebraska" Facebook pages. Frost was born in Nebraska. His mother, Carol, was an Olympic track athlete and was the head coach of the Nebraska women's track and field team from 1977 to 1980.

Frost is looking at a seven-year deal that will pay about $35 million, USA TODAY Sports reported. Riley only had one season in which the Huskers had a winning season.
