HDMI v2.1 specification officially released

HDMI v2.1 specification officially released HDMI v2.1 specification officially released

The standards for the latest HDMI version, 2.1, have now been released by the HDMI Forum, a governing organization that handles specifications for HDMI. HDMI 2.1 supports an insane 10K resolution which throws the pixels up to a huge 10240 x 4320, up from the 7680 x 4320 that 8K is capable of. Dynamic HDR formats are also supported.

Supporting the 48Gbps bandwidth is the new Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable.

If you're sceptical that a mere TV needs bandwidth that over Ethernet would be suitable for a data centre, think again: the HDMI Forum explained uncompressed 8K high dynamic range (HDR) video is dependent on the boosted bandwidth. It offers low electro-magnetic interference, which reduces interference with nearby wireless devices. This new cable is backwards compatible with your existing installed base of HDMI devices.

Even though the HDMI Forum released the new specification, adopters will need to conduct a compliant test to get the official nod from the group that their products work with HDMI 2.1.

Because of this, HDMI 2.1 seems more of a future-proofing set of standards than something that will affect current devices, seeing as people are still starting to jump into the 4K bandwagon.

The cable, which is backwards-compatible with other specs, allows for a massive bandwidth of 48 Gb/s.

eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) targets simplifying connectivity and supports the most advanced audio formats and highest audio quality. There's also Quick Media Switching, which is helpful for movies and video because it eliminates the delay (often displayed as a black screen) before content appears on the screen.

Quick Frame Transport (QFT) reduces latency for smoother no-lag gaming, and real-time interactive virtual reality. It also features the new Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM).

Back in January, the HDMI Forum-the trade association that develops the HDMI spec for video interconnects-outlined its plans for HDMI 2.1. The HDMI Forum now has a membership of 92 companies, and is actively inviting more companies to apply for membership and help shape the future of HDMI technology. More resolution, higher frame rates, and more color depth. You can also contact us to schedule a CES meeting at vrobbins@hdmi.org.
