Uber is partially banned in Tel Aviv Report: Uber Ride-Sharing Banned in Israel
Lindsey Cook | 29 November, 2017, 01:26

A court in Israel ordered Uber on Monday to halt a trial programme in the Tel Aviv area that the US ride-hailing company had hoped would pave the way for its full operations in the country.

Judge Eitan Orenstein ordered the ban on Uber's ride-share programs in Israel — uberDAY and uberNIGHT — to go into effect Wednesday, and raised concerns about its insurance for passengers. The Uber defense was apparently insufficient to convince the court that the new company adapted its system to conform with Israeli law and administrative regulations.

The hearing was held following a civil suit filed against Uber's Israeli operations by the Association of Taxi Owners and Gett (previously known as GetTaxi), a global on-demand mobility company that connects customers with transportation, goods and services.

Uber, which operates in more than 160 cities worldwide and allows private drivers to freelance as taxi operators, has faced blowback from Israeli regulators since it launched a trial run in Tel Aviv in 2016. The ruling comes after the Ministry of Transportation issued an indictment against Uber in May, alleging Uber was operating without a government license. It now operates in about 600 cities worldwide.

In another case pending against Uber in Israel, the Transportation Ministry has sued the company in a Tel Aviv court for allegedly charging to take passengers without a taxi license.

In the face of criticism of the legality of its operations earlier this month, Uber Israel CEO Yoni Greifman said that the existing legislation was outdated.
