South Korean military officials said yesterday (Nov. 26) that the updates go into great detail on the 24-year-old soldier's condition and medical treatment in the South.

South Korea is taunting its rival to the north after a soldier defected from the Hermit Kingdom - by blasting news of his escape over loudspeakers along the border separating the warring countries.

The JSA is jointly overseen by the U.S. -led U.N. Command and by North Korea, with South Korean and North Korean border guards facing each other only a feet apart. As many as four F-35A Lightning stealth fighters are also likely to join the drill, Reuters reported, citing a U.S. Air Force official.

China, the North's sole ally, has also said the new US sanctions - which also target Chinese companies doing business with the pariah state - are "wrong".

Earlier Monday, South Korea's defense minister visited the area and criticized Pyongyang for firing across and physically crossing the border in pursuit of the defector, a violation of the armistice that ended the Korean War. The remark was accompanied by a photo of several North Korean men carrying out the work while North Korean soldiers surrounded them.

The ditch is to the immediate north of the military demarcation line, where the defector abandoned his jeep that had been stuck in a ditch and started running toward the south.

"This defector's plight is a window onto North Korean life", Brian Hook, director of policy planning and senior policy adviser at the State Department wrote.

"Such is the cruelty of North Korea's regime", he said, "and such is the responsibility of those foreign governments that enable it".

"Shooting towards the South at a defecting person, that's a violation of the armistice agreement", Song said. He also criticized the Chinese government for repatriating North Korean defectors found within its borders, and called on China and Russian Federation to halt its "slave labor" made up of North Korean workers.

"The United States will not sit idly by as a rogue regime lawlessly pursues those who have made the life-or-death choice to run to freedom", he said.
